Course Objectives
Generally speaking, it is generally agreed that more than 90% of the thermal energy used in industrial processes passes through a heat exchanger at least once. The objective of this course is the calculation and sizing of a single- and two-phase heat exchanger.
Sizing an exchanger consists of calculating the exchange surface area required to achieve the desired performance (power, outlet temperature). It will then be necessary to determine the pressure losses that will result from the circulation of fluids (due to friction against the walls due to viscosity) in order to verify compliance with the specifications, which often impose an upper limit on the pressure drop value. Although there is a wide variety of heat exchangers, however, four types of exchangers (shell and tube exchangers, tubular exchangers, finned exchangers, and plate exchangers) will be discussed in detail as they constitute the majority of heat exchangers used in various applications in the renewable energy fields.

Les problèmes se posent aussi différemment selon qu'il s'agit de concevoir une nouvelle installation ou de changer le fluide d'une existante. Dans ce dernier cas, il est nécessaire que les caractéristiques thermodynamiques du fluide de remplacement soient proches de celles de l'original, alors que dans le premier cas le changement peut quelquefois permettre une amélioration des performances de l'installation. Les valeurs de la température et la pression critiques sont très importantes. Ces données déterminent la limite de la haute pression du cycle. Près de la pression critique, une variation très faible de la température peut entraîner un changement de pression important, ce qui peut influencer le comportement du système.
