Heat transfer is the thermal energy in transit due to a spatial difference in temperature. The second law of thermodynamics tells us that heat naturally flows from a body at high temperature to a body at low temperature. Heat transfer has three modes or mechanisms: conduction, convection, and radiation. However, the transfer of mass has only two modes: conduction and convection.
